Hala Schoukair

Biography

New York based artist Hala Schoukair was born in Beirut, Lebanon. In 1976, at the start of the Lebanese civil war, she moved to Paris and obtained an M.A degree in Cinema History from Sorbonne University.  In 1987, due to the continuous turmoil in Lebanon, Schoukair moved to the United States

Largely self-taught, Schoukair started her artistic career with ink and gouache drawings.
The psychological and emotional effects of war are often reflected in Schoukair’s work. Having been uprooted from Beirut several times, the sense of permanence and solidity she used to feel for her homeland has become fragile. Even when Schoukair goes back to visit, she believes Beirut no longer exists.

Her work has been featured at Alif Gallery in Washington D.C. and NYC’s Mark Mark Gallery, City Hall Municipal Gallery, HCC Arts Galleries, Diwan Cultral Center and The Art Students League.  In 2001, Schoukair’s work on paper received the Distinction Award from The Arts Students League. In addition, Schoukair has published Saloua Raouda Choucair: Her Life and Art in honor of her mother, the pioneer Lebanese abstract sculptor Saloua Raouda Choucair.
